This page explains how the numbers and lists on PetToolkit are put together, which sources sit behind them, and how we keep them current. If you spot something that looks off, tell us through the contact page and we will check it.
How the age calculator is built
The pet age calculator reports two numbers for dogs and one for cats.
- Size adjusted chart. The first figure follows the size based curve used across veterinary references: a dog's first year is worth about 15 human years, the second adds roughly nine more, and each later year adds four to seven depending on size. Cats run on their own curve. Larger dogs age faster once mature, which is why the same dog age reads higher for a giant breed than a small one.
- UCSD formula. For dogs we also show the 2020 formula from Wang and colleagues, human age equals sixteen times the natural log of the dog's age plus thirty one. It was fit to DNA methylation in Labrador Retrievers, so it reflects biological aging rather than a fixed ratio. We apply it from about one year of age, where the model is meaningful.
- Life stages and senior thresholds. The life-stage bands and the age at which senior care starts follow guidance from the American Animal Hospital Association and the American Association of Feline Practitioners, adjusted for dog size. For cats we use the 2021 AAHA/AAFP feline life stages, which count a cat as senior from about 10 years old.
Human year figures are a model, not a clinical reading. They estimate from age alone and cannot account for breed mix, weight, lifestyle, or illness. Treat them as a guide and rely on your veterinarian for medical decisions.
How the name database is curated
The name lists come from a database of around 350 entries, each reviewed by hand before it goes live. Every name is tagged by species first, so a dog pun never appears on a cat page, then by style, color, gender, and syllable count, which is what the on-page filters read. Each entry carries a short meaning or origin where one exists, from Latin and Norse roots to pop-culture sources. A built-in check flags names that sound like training cues such as sit or stay, drawing on how dogs process similar sounds. The full reasoning sits in our guide to names that sound like commands.
Where the popularity signal comes from
Some names carry a "Top pick" or "Popular" badge. That signal is drawn from two open, publicly licensed dog-license registries, not from guesswork:
- Hundenamen der Stadt Zurich, published by the Zurich city police as open data since 2015 and released under a CC0 (public domain) dedication. Luna, Bella, and Stella sit near the top year after year.
- NYC Dog Licensing Dataset, published by the NYC Department of Health under the NYC Open Data Terms of Use. In 2016, Bella (1,358 registrations) and Max (1,268) led the list, followed by Charlie and Coco.
The badge is a popularity level, not a live per-name count, since these registries change every year. Names near the top of both lists are marked as top picks, other frequently registered names as popular, and everything else carries no badge. We show it so you can tell a crowd favorite from a rarer choice at a glance. Because both registries record dogs, we only show the badge in a dog context; cat pages leave it off rather than pass dog data off as cat data.
How often we update
We add names and categories over time and re-check existing entries as we go. Age data and sources are reviewed when the underlying guidance changes. Each page carries its own last updated date so you can see when its content last moved.
Accuracy and review
PetToolkit is an independent project, and this material is educational. The age content is written from published veterinary research and guidelines rather than reviewed by a named clinician, so it is general information, not veterinary advice for your specific pet. We are open to review by a licensed veterinarian and will credit that review here when it is in place. In the meantime, we cite sources with dates on the age pages and welcome corrections through the contact page.
